The games focus on directing a horde of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Plant\">plant<\/a>-like creatures called Pikmin in order to collect items by destroying obstacles, avoiding hazards and fighting\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fauna\">fauna<\/a>\u00a0that are hazardous to both the player character and the Pikmin.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pikmin#cite_note-Pikminology-3\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The series features four entries. The first two,\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pikmin_(video_game)\">Pikmin<\/a><\/em>, released in 2001, and\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pikmin_2\">Pikmin 2<\/a><\/em>, released in 2004, were released for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/GameCube\">GameCube<\/a>\u00a0and later\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Porting\">ported<\/a>\u00a0to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wii\">Wii<\/a>\u00a0as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Play_Control!\">New Play Control!<\/a>\u00a0games in 2008 and 2009, while\u00a0<em>Pikmin 2<\/em>\u00a0was also re-released as a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nintendo_Selects\">Nintendo Selects<\/a>\u00a0title in 2012. The series&#8217; first handheld title, and most recent entry,\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hey!_Pikmin\">Hey! Pikmin<\/a><\/em>, was released for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nintendo_3DS\">Nintendo 3DS<\/a>\u00a0in 2017.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pikmin#cite_note-Pikmin3DS-4\">[3]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Another mainline entry in the series has been confirmed to be in development.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pikmin#cite_note-Eurogamer.net-5\">[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2>Gameplay[<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Pikmin&amp;action=edit&amp;section=1\">edit<\/a>]<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The series&#8217; gameplay combines elements of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Action_platformer\">action platformer<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Puzzle_video_game\">puzzle<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Real-time_strategy\">strategy<\/a>\u00a0gameplay. The\u00a0<em>Pikmin<\/em>\u00a0games focus on exploring an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Earth\">Earth<\/a>-like planet named PNF-404,<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pikmin#cite_note-:0-6\">[5]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0and controlling a crowd of the titular Pikmin. Pikmin are intelligent, multicolored, plant-animal\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hybrid_(biology)\">hybrids<\/a>\u00a0that follow the orders of their leader. There have been multiple leaders over the course of the series, with the first and most notable being\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Captain_Olimar\">Captain Olimar<\/a>, a tiny\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Extraterrestrial_life\">alien<\/a>\u00a0from the planet Hocotate introduced in the original\u00a0<em>Pikmin<\/em>.\u00a0<em>Pikmin 2<\/em>\u00a0features Louie and The President, Olimar&#8217;s co-worker and boss, respectively, who are also playable leaders.\u00a0<em>Pikmin 3<\/em>\u00a0features leaders from a new alien species. The leaders are Alph, Brittany, and Charlie, who come from the planet Koppai and are similar to the Hocotatians.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pikmin#cite_note-7\">[6]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Pikmin are directed to perform a number of tasks, with the primary one being the retrieval of items integral to the mission of each game.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pikmin#cite_note-Explorer-8\">[7]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The player must direct the Pikmin to overcome obstacles and PNF-404&#8217;s fauna.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pikmin#cite_note-Pikminology-3\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pikmin#cite_note-Explorer-8\">[7]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Because individual Pikmin are small and weak against most\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Predator\">predators<\/a>, and some are best suited for certain tasks, it is the responsibility of the player to direct the Pikmin appropriately in order to ensure successful retrievals of any items, avoid any hazards, and quickly tend to any obstacles and predators. The number of Pikmin and their abilities have shifted over the course of the franchise, with the first\u00a0<em>Pikmin<\/em>\u00a0title featuring three colours: Red, Yellow, and Blue. Red Pikmin can resist fire, Blue Pikmin can move underwater thanks to their\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gill\">gills<\/a>, and Yellow Pikmin can be thrown higher than other Pikmin, and are able to carry bomb rocks.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pikmin#cite_note-Pikminology-3\">[2]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In\u00a0<em>Pikmin 2<\/em>, Yellow Pikmin have lost their ability to carry bomb rocks in exchange for being immune to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electric\">electrical<\/a>\u00a0hazards, while two new colors are introduced: White Pikmin and Purple Pikmin. White Pikmin are the fastest, resistant to poisonous gases, capable of poisoning enemies, and capable of spotting objects buried underground. In comparison, Purple Pikmin are significantly stronger and heavier than the other types, which makes them excellent at inflicting damage and carrying heavy items.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pikmin#cite_note-9\">[8]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><em>Pikmin 3<\/em>\u00a0introduced two more types: the gray-colored Rock Pikmin, and the pink-colored Winged Pikmin. Rock Pikmin can break crystalline materials, cannot be crushed or impaled, and inflict the most damage out of all Pikmin types when thrown. In comparison, Winged Pikmin can fly freely, which enables them to recover elevated items and attack airborne enemies with ease.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pikmin#cite_note-Pikminology-3\">[2]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In addition to making each type capable of carrying bomb rocks,\u00a0<em>Pikmin 3<\/em>\u00a0also adjusted the abilities of Yellow, Blue, White, and Purple Pikmin. Yellow Pikmin are tied with Rock Pikmin for the fastest digging speed; Blue Pikmin are capable of swimming; White Pikmin are tied with Winged Pikmin for the lowest attack strength, and slowest digging speed; Purple Pikmin are tied with Red Pikmin for second highest attack strength, and second fastest digging speed.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Outside of coloration, all types of Pikmin share the same method of indicating their strength and swiftness: the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Plant_stem\">stalk<\/a>\u00a0atop their heads will sport either a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Leaf\">leaf<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bud\">bud<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Flower\">flower<\/a>, which develops when Pikmin are fed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nectar\">nectar<\/a>\u00a0or left planted in the ground for a certain amount of time.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pikmin#cite_note-Pikminology-3\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pikmin#cite_note-Explorer-8\">[7]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0By extension, all types of Pikmin are stored in their respective motherships, referred to as &#8220;Onions&#8221;, for safety after sunset, as they are vulnerable to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nocturnal\">nocturnal<\/a>\u00a0predators.
